Host David dives into the charm and risks of nostalgia, tracing its history from 17th-century homesickness to Proust’s madeleine and today’s nostalgia-fueled culture. He weaves personal memories—Saved by the Bell, Blockbuster nights, ’80s and ’90s toys—and immigrant experiences of longing for home.
The episode explains how nostalgia can both restore well-being and be exploited by marketers, and encourages listeners to reflect on their own attachments while seeking help if nostalgia becomes harmful.

In this episode of the Deconstructing Topic Podcast, host David explores the life and legacy of Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos and shares a personal family connection—his mother sought refuge at a shelter named for the poet.
David reflects on Julia's poetry, feminism, and independence activism, as well as her struggles with heartbreak and alcohol, her untimely death at 39, and the episode’s wider themes of domestic violence, artistic pain, and healing through storytelling.

Welcome to a heartfelt episode of the Deconstructing Topic Podcast. I'm your host, David, and today we dive deep into the life of an extraordinary poet, journalist, and teacher, Julia de Burgos.
Born in Puerto Rico on February 17, 1914, Julia de Burgos left an indelible mark on the world with her powerful writings and advocacy. In this episode, I share how her life and work resonate with me personally, especially given my family's history and our struggles with domestic violence.
Julia de Burgos was not just a poet but also a feminist and an advocate for Puerto Rican independence, making significant contributions to cultural arts. Despite her accomplishments, her life was marked by personal struggles, leading to her untimely death in New York City at the age of 39.
This episode serves as both a tribute to Julia de Burgos and a reflection on the impact of art and personal resilience. Stay tuned for a future episode where I will read some of her poignant poems. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and let's keep supporting and uplifting each other.
